Krishak Bandhu Initiative
After taking office as the esteemed Chief Minister, several schemes were introduced, including the Krishak Bandhu Scheme aimed at farmers. Launched by the Department of Agriculture in 2019, the benefits of this scheme began reaching farmers in the state in 2021. This initiative provides financial aid to farmers twice a year—once for Kharif cultivation and again for Rabi cultivation. Furthermore, the scheme also offers insurance coverage to the farmers of the state.
Objective of the Krishak Bandhu Scheme
India is predominantly an agricultural nation, with West Bengal being a leading state in rice production. However, the costs of fertilizers, seeds, and other agricultural inputs are rising significantly. Despite these increased costs, farmers are not receiving fair prices for their crops, resulting in considerable distress among them.
In response to this situation, Honorable Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee introduced the Krishak Bandhu Scheme to offer economic support to farmers and uplift their spirits. The scheme includes provisions for financial assistance based on the extent of land each farmer cultivates. Additionally, it ensures financial support for the families of farmers in the event of their demise.
Benefits of the Krishak Bandhu Scheme
- The Krishak Bandhu Scheme offers farmers with less than 1 acre of land an annual financial support of ₹4,000. This amount is disbursed in two installments of ₹2,000 each throughout the year.
- For farmers who own 1 acre or more of land, the scheme provides a total annual assistance of ₹10,000, distributed in two installments of ₹5,000 each.
- Additionally, under the Krishak Bandhu Scheme, if a farmer aged between 18 and 60 years passes away, their family is entitled to receive a one-time financial support of ₹2 lakh.
